State of Alaska AFA

In 1935, General Billy Mitchell famously told Congress, “I believe that in the future, whoever holds Alaska will hold the world.” Today, that vision is a reality. From the top of the globe, the Airmen and Guardians serving here protect our nation and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific. This vital work is a team effort—one that relies on dedicated professionals, resilient families, and a community that stands firmly behind them.

The Alaska State Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) is an independent, non-profit organization built to be the voice for our Airmen, Guardians, and their families. We carry forward the legacy of AFA National—founded in 1946 by General Henry “Hap” Arnold and General Jimmy Doolittle—who knew that a strong nation requires a citizenry that understands and supports its airpower.

As the “on-the-ground” presence for this mission, we serve as the vital bridge between the public and our military. Our mission is to ensure that those who defend the Last Frontier, and the families who stand with them, have the unwavering advocacy, resources, and public support they need to succeed.

From our newest Airmen and Guardians at the tactical edge to the senior leaders shaping global strategy, the AFA is a champion for every member of the team. We understand that our national defense is only as strong as the people who execute it. We are proud to advocate for the Total Force and the families who are the foundation of our military community and share in the sacrifice of service.

Our work is built on three core pillars designed to empower our force from their first day of service to their transition into the veteran community:

  • Educate: We tell the story of the Arctic. We ensure that the public and our nation’s leaders understand the critical “Why” behind Alaska’s air and space missions, securing the long-term support our forces require.
  • Advocate: We push for the future. We champion the advanced technology, robust infrastructure, and quality-of-life initiatives—from housing and healthcare to spouse employment—that allow our service members and their families to thrive in the world’s most demanding environment.
  • Support: We invest in excellence. Through scholarships, professional development for all ranks, and local community programs, we provide a network of care that honors the human element of every mission.

From the frozen interior to the Pacific horizon, we are the voice for those who serve in the Arctic. The Alaska State AFA stands with our Airmen, Guardians, and their families. Together, we are keeping our nation strong, secure, and mission-ready for the challenges of tomorrow.
